The Theft of Brisingamen

While Freyja chastised her husband’s killer, Loki, ever eager for mischief, spied Brisingamen unprotected in the cavern nestled amid the scattering of Freyja’s jewels that she had cast aside in her grief. Since the night he had first plucked it from her neck at Odin’s command, he had desired to regain its beauty.

In the guise of a seal, Loki visited Vágasker. His seal-self lumbered up the rocky shore, pausing to bask in the sunshine while remaining watchful for any movement. After making certain the cavern remained vacant, he shifted back to his normal form before ducking into its depths to steal the necklace from the unguarded hoard. Delighted with himself, Loki climbed onto the rocky beach to examine the treasure he had taken. Before a line of boulders that faced out to sea, he hunkered down out of sight of Freyja, who stood in full view on the mainland shore delivering her curse to a quivering Hadding.

From his post on the bridgehead of Bifrost the white god, charged long ago by Odin to keep a watchful eye on the actions of Farbauti’s son, watched the passing events. When Heimdall saw what Loki had done, he left his post to intervene. Loki, ever vigilant when in action, caught the brilliant flash of the sentry’s approach. Tumbling forward, he ducked as the warden of the gods struck a wide blow with his gleaming sword.

Drawing into himself, Loki borrowed from the nature of his father. He glowed brightly, then burst into a column of fire that snaked its way up into the sky. Ever quick at responding to attacks, Heimdall drew in a bank of thick, dark clouds that burst open, loosing a blinding downpour. The column sputtered as the sudden deluge threatened to quench its blaze.

A sharp curse slipped from Loki’s lips as he shifted into the form of a bear. Growling low, he made menacing swipes with his clawed paws. Heimdall grinned wide, angled his blade at the beast’s heart, and charged, a bloodthirsty howl bursting from his throat.

Loki dropped his guise and fled to the seashore. Hastily, he turned himself into a seal and dove into the surf, the necklace gripped in his teeth. Donning his own seal skin, Heimdall followed the frantically swimming Loki. He chased his prey through cresting waves onto the rocky shore of Singastein where rested a herd of seals.

The white god scanned the crowded beach, gazing into the eyes of each seal for the telltale sign of Loki, for a person in disguise can change all but their eyes. Recognition flashed between them, a glint of hate fresh as a ray of sunshine breaking through the clouds. With loud bellows, they charged one another across the rocks. Crashing together, the huge beasts slashed at each other’s throats, with long tusks drew blood, screamed, and crashed together again.

They fought all along the shore, slamming into other seals that barked trying to get out of their way, until the brave son of nine mothers forced Loki to retire into the sea, bellowing in anger and frustration without his stolen prize.
